Island Retreat

This project is one which was definitely inspired by nature. The waterfront property has been in the family for years, yet never developed. My clients were so excited to be building their dream retirement home on such an exquisite piece of land. The end result needed to feel as though one were living on a cruise ship. With vistas of bald eagles, pods of orca, neighbouring deer, tranquil sunsets and sparkling ocean as far as the eye can see, the mood had to be one of subtlety, softness and sanctuary.

The driftwood, beach pebbles and blue of the ocean was the inspiration for the colour scheme. Cool white walls were warmed by brushed oak floors and beams tinted with a subtle hint of bluish-green stain. Clean lines in both the furnishings, built-ins and fireplace surround allowed for artistic pieces such as the driftwood floor lamp and the occasional collection of antique toys or glass to be incorporated without the space feeling cluttered.

The beachy elements of driftwood and sand re-occur throughout the home. The master ensuite vanity was stained a warm gray-brown. Heavily textured nightstands showcase concrete lamps with linen shades which flank a neutral upholstered headboard. A wool carpet with a “pebbly” texture completes the story.

The mood flows from exterior to interior and back again. By maintaining clean simple lines throughout the space, your eye always goes back to the view. We created an interior mood that is reflective of the exterior surroundings, yet with all the creature comforts one could ever desire.
